Hideto Matsumoto, von Fans auch "hide" genannt, wurde am 13.Dezember 1964 in Kanagawa (Yokohama) geboren. Selbst jetzt nach seinem Tod zählt er noch zu einem der bekanntesten Menschen in Japan.

Bevor er zu X kam hatte er eine eigene Band genannt "Yokosuka Saver Tiger" (Hide & Sabre Tigers).


Als "l'enfant terrible" hatte er immer ausgefallene Klamotten und gefärbte Haare - anfangs Blond, später einem Regenbogen ähnelnd, dann in Pink. 1987 kam er zu der Band "X-Japan". Er übernahm den Part des E-Gitarristen (bevorzugt benutze er fernades) und schrieb einige Songs für X-Japan.

Während er noch bei X-Japan war gründete er die Band "Spread Beaver" um für seine Solos durch zu starten. Solo hatte er vorher schon als hide seinen Erfolg mit diversen Songs. Ebenfalls arbeitete er auch mit der japanisch-amerikanischen Band "Zilch" zusammen. Stark beinflusst war er von Bands wie KISS, AC/DC etc.

Er hatte außerdem einige Hilfsorgansationen laufen, versuchte den Fans nah zu sein soweit es sein Beruf zuließ.

Hideto Matsumoto starb am 2. Mai 1998. Angeblich war es Selbstmord. Gerüchte zufolge soll er unter Alkoholeinfluss eine Krawatte oder Handtuch benutzt haben, um sich damit an der Türklinke aufzuhängen. Er starb noch auf dem Weg ins Krankenhaus. Zu seiner Beerdigung erschienen Unmengen von Fans und "Nicht-Fans", die ihm die letzte Ehre erweisten.

Für viele Menschen auf der ganzen Welt starb so ein Idol ihrer Herzen.

Mittlerweile gibt es zum Gedenken an ihn ein Hide Museum in Yokosuka.

Unter anderem gibt es Unmengen an Merchandise, die man von ihm kaufen kann, wie Dolls, Penicl boards, Stickers, Stifte, Handyanhänger, Handys, Feuerzeuge, etc.
